I started making these what I call “sketch animations” a number of years ago. My friend and former colleague, Ethan Greenbaum, gave me a drawing once that of a face with the eyes closed penciled over an erased image of the face with the eyes open. He explained to me how, rather than ignoring the erased area or judging it as a mistake, the erased part actually gave the drawing movement and memory. I thought about what he said for a long time and about a year later started to experiment with turning the concept into a stop motion piece. The process really fascinates me.
